Cell Phone Signal Boosters sales have skyrocketed providing phone users signals in areas that were previously dead spots.  With cell phones a necessity for some business and emergency personal why is the FCC considering banning these devices?

Have you ever been traveling outside of urban areas only to find your cell phone is not getting any signal?  While for some this may actually be a nice break, for others that depend on their phone for business or emergencies this can be a real problem.  While the cell phone service providers do their best to provide broad coverage, each of them has dead areas where current cell towers do not provide a signal for any number of reasons.

A business associate who is a realtor recently was telling me he could not get a signal in about half of the area he covers.  Many homes in his area are up canyons or miles from populated areas.  While service is spotty to and around these homes, there are definite dead areas.  As a realtor, having his phone available is a business necessity.  Without phone access he may miss opportunities for new business and can lose his current customers.  As a result he needed a way to keep his phone connected as much as possible.  He found the solution in a cell phone signal booster.

A worse situation would be one where there was an emergency in one of these areas.  In a recent emergency situation involving a bus running off the road in a remote area, the first driver that discovered the accident had to drive for 30 minutes to get a cell phone signal.  Once on the scene, emergency personal also could not get any cell phone signal making it more difficult to quickly get the information needed to care for the injured.

Because of these types of situations, cell phone signal booster sales have skyrocketed over the last few years.  Signal boosters can often provide a signal in areas where a phone was unusable before.

The FCC recently begun consideration of a potential ban of cell phone signal boosters in response to the service provider’s request.  This request was done quietly without much public discussion.  A signal booster that is not manufactured properly can overload a cell tower cutting off many if not all other customers connected to that tower.  As a result service providers have asked the FCC to ban signal boosters.  If not for a legitimate need for boosters such a request would be understandable.

A good quality cell signal booster adjusts its signal boost based on how strong or weak the signal is.  These boosters do not have any impact on the other customers connected to the tower.   It is possible to provide boosters that will not have a negative impact on the cell towers but provide a boost to the signal in situations like those mentioned.

In response to the FCC potential ruling, around 500 comments were submitted largely in favor of signal boosters.  While the comment period is over, it is still possible to contact Legislators regarding this decision which will be made by the FCC.  The service providers have deep pockets and are influential in Washington.  For those that rely on a quality cell phone signal booster for their livelihood or to save others lives, it may be worth taking a few minutes to voice your opinion on this topic.
